Warsteel: tank battles from 1941 to 1991, coming soon to Android and iPhone

Warsteel: Tank Battles is the new game from Innovatek Software: side-scrolling tank battles with real physics, realistic armor and historical campaigns from Moscow 1941 to Desert Storm. It is in testing on Google Play and on TestFlight for iPhone and iPad, and will be available to everyone soon. Version 1.1.3 brings new missions, Veteran mode, a new headquarters and more realistic graphics. Here is what you will find.

Aim for the weak spots

Every tank has armor plates with their own thickness and slope: a hit on the front can bounce, one on the side or rear goes through. You drive over hills and craters with real physics, switch lanes to flank the enemy or dodge a shot, and turn around to hit it from behind. You pick your ammunition — armor-piercing, APCR and high-explosive, plus a fourth special round: tungsten, HEAT, fragmentation or smoke — and the reticle turns green, yellow or red depending on whether the shot will penetrate. Along the way you collect fuel, repairs, ammo and smoke screens.

Three eras, 28 tanks from five nations

The campaigns follow history. In World War II you fight at Moscow and Kursk with the Red Army, in Operation Barbarossa and at Kursk with the Wehrmacht and in Normandy with the US Army, in T-34s, KV-1s, IS-2s, Panzer IVs, Panthers, Tigers, Shermans and British Churchills. The Cold War takes you to divided Germany in 1985, between the Fulda Gap and Hof, with T-55s, T-62s, Leopard 1s, M48s, M60s, Centurions and AMX-30s, stabilizers and reactive armor. The modern era reaches 1990–91, from Lüneburg to Desert Storm, with T-72s, T-80Us, Leopard 2s and M1 Abrams, composite armor and thermal sights that see through smoke. In all, 11 campaigns and 88 missions, each with its three stars.

New missions and Veteran mode

With version 1.1.3, missions are no longer just breakthroughs, pursuits of a fleeing enemy and races against the clock: in some you must hold the position against the enemy assault, in others destroy an artillery battery. Once you complete a campaign you can replay it in Veteran mode, against expert enemy crews, with rewards multiplied by 1.5 and separate stars. If a fatal hit knocks your tank out, once per mission you can put out the fire and return to battle, by watching a video or instantly with Premium. And when you lose, the game explains why and gives you a tip for next time.

Air support and threats from the sky

In battle you can call an air strike on the enemy — Il-2s, Stukas and P-47s in World War II, A-10s and Su-25s in the later eras, up to Apache attack helicopters — or an artillery salvo or a reinforcement tank. The enemy has its aircraft too, and an alarm warns you when they come: time to switch lanes or lay a smoke screen.

Garage, ranks and leaderboards

It all starts from the new headquarters, with your chosen tank in the foreground. In the garage you buy new tanks, upgrade engine, gun, armor and tracks and choose from 48 liveries and camouflages. Victories raise your rank, and ranks open the later eras. Daily missions and a daily reward give you a reason to come back. On Android, with Google Play Games, your results enter three online leaderboards — tanks destroyed, distance covered and shots — and your progress is saved in the cloud. No account needed, it also plays offline and is translated into 12 languages.

Free, with a one-time Premium

Warsteel is free to download and play. Rewarded videos are optional; a full-screen ad may appear between missions. If you prefer, you can buy Premium once, for €4.99, and keep it forever: the tanks of the rank you have reached join your garage for free, all liveries unlock, the ads between missions disappear and video rewards arrive instantly, without watching. No subscription.
